After weeks of rumors and anticipation, ABC finally aired “Bruce Jenner: The Interview” where Bruce Jenner tells Diane Sawyer in the interview “I am a woman”.
During the interview, Olympic gold medalist and TV celebrity Bruce Jenner confirmed his transgender identity, saying ‘Bruce lived a lie his whole life’ and expressed determination to show true self. The reality TV star and former Olympic athlete told Diane Sawyer that she now regards herself as female.
“For all intents and purposes I’m a woman,” she said.
In the interview, Bruce Jenner revealed his ex-wife Kris Jenner had a difficult time coming to terms with his gender transition, but is now able to call him her hero.
Bruce Jenner’s ex-wife Linda Thompson also posted a very supportive message on her blog by detailing her and Bruce Jenner’s love affair, and offering her message of support, calling Jenner A ‘champion for those who share the struggle’.
“…Bruce came to me one day with a very somber look on his face and said, ‘There’s something about me that I really need to tell you, something you need to know…Bruce told me that he identified as a woman.”
Transgender people feel that the gender to which they were born, or assigned at birth, does not fit. Coming out is an extremely delicate thing, which is usually done after considerable thought. IT is estimated more than 50% of Transgender youth will have had at least one suicide attempt by their 20th birthday.
Despite living his life as a man, Jenner feels he has come to terms with his true self and is becoming a trail blazer on the issues of transgender. With support of family and friends, Jenner also is receiving support from the entertainment industry. Elton John weighed in on Bruce Jenner’s Gender Transition by stating, “It’s an incredibly brave thing to do, especially when you’re older”.
Sawyer asks: “Are you gonna be okay?” After a brief pause, he answers: “I hope I’m gonna be okay. I feel like I’m going to be okay. 2015 is going to be quite a ride. Quite a ride.”
